Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem Review

Best Data CMX300 SmartOne Cable Modem

I have actually had a CMX300 for some time - probably about 5 years or so. For a reason I forget now, I bought a Motorola SB5120 about two years ago and it seemed a little faster so I put the Best Data on the shelf. A little over a year ago, Time Warner (Roadrunner) replaced Comcast in my area, and I began having intermittent connectivity problems. Naturally I blamed Time Warner. I had to reset the cable modem sometimes 10 times a week. Well, recently, my service went completely out and was out for several days while I waited for Time Warner to come figure out what the problem was. I don't know what made me want to try the old Best Data modem, but I figured "what the heck" and plugged it in. Wouldn't you know, it worked, I called Time Warner with the "new" MAC address, and here I am writing this review. The old standby to the rescue. I may at some point replace the CMX300 again, but I think I'll continue to hold onto it for its reliability and the fact that it has never let me down completely like the Motorola did.

D-Link Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point DAP-1522 - Wireless access point - external Review

D-Link Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point DAP-1522 - Wireless access point - external
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a wireless bridge so that I could move my printer to a room with no jacks. The D-Link DAP-1522 had great reviews, and a bridge should work with any environment. Not this one.
* The router's wireless settings can not be configured without Internet Explorer (a Linux user like me has to fire up a VM).
* The bridge would not relay DHCP responses from the wireless network to the attached wired devices. D-Link support says that is because I am using a Linux router (though it shouldn't make a difference). If I configured static IP addresses on my wired devices, they worked great.
* D-Link has not released new firmware in over a year, so I doubt that these problems will get fixed.
* D-Link support was "lacking" (and don't get me started on Office Depot's awful return policy).
* Custom firmwares like dd-wrt or tomato won't work on this device, so there is no easy way to correct these problems.
In short, I can get it to do what I want, but it's a lot of hassle.

I've been through the whole progression of sharing the cable modem at my house for 5 home PC's and my work laptop. I started with the Microsoft solution of ICS (I specifically upgraded to Windows 98 SE to get that feature). I used thinnet on my home network and it worked ok but having to have the one PC on for the rest was awkard and it was slow for the kids multiplayer games. I then moved on to a SMC 7004BR router and it was bliss. Easy setup except the printer sharing. Even there I called their support and they walked me through it. I have since stepped up to the 7008BR for two locations I manage and these are better than the 7004BR (Faster too). I cannot recommend them enough.

I've given up on this product. The installation CD's first window was a mystery on what process to select since none showed as "installation". Called toll free number. Answered eventually (after enduring endless menu) by person who clearly spoke English as a second language. 30 min. on the phone later, I just gave up,thanked the guy for his time and ended the call. At one point I wondered if my call had prompted a hidden camera joke where eventually someone would tell me a joke had been played on me and the person I was speaking with really was Not a tech support rep etc.etc. I was absolutely worn out after dealing with Linksys's customer support for new installations. I had to repeat every sentence the guy said in an effort to confirm his instructions and then steps later, he would change his mind and have me un do something he had instructed me to do previously. After 30 min. on phone I questioned what to do with an included cable that he had not mentioned. When he told me it should have been installed many steps prior, I knew it was time to stop this torture. It was truly unbelievable ! End result: I am donating this unit to a local youth home, and buying another brand highly recommended to me by my neighbor who installed a wireless network in his home without any calls to tech support or any problems.I read scathing reports about the poor installation software on various Linksys products and now I am a believer. However poor the installation CD is, live tech support is worse....worthless, in fact.If you are not tech savy, I can't recommend using this product based on my installation misadventure.

Play N600 HD Dual Band N Route Review

I was also "iffy" with the purchase of this one. Actually I bought it first because it looked great for the price. But then I came home and started doing research on it. There is where I started to get scared and worried beacause of all the mixed reviews and especially because most of them were negative ones. It got to a point where I was doubting what I have done and I almost returned it a couple of times even before opening the box! (Side Note: I recently got Comcast High Speed Internet and I am using the Motorola SB5101U modem. I had purchased both my modem and my wireless router before I had my cable internet connected). But I decided to try it out first and in case it didn't work, then return it. Make a long story short, the router works awesome, the speed is great, the setup was so easy. Actually, I only plugged it to my router and turned it on. I didn't use the Setup CD or anything as it is already set up to just plug it and use it. You can use the CD to install the additional software (to use the USB ports for storage or using a printer, etc.) but it is not necessary. Last thing, the router had already the latest firmware (ver. 1.00.28) so I think it wasa one of the reasons it just worked and it is still working (I already had it for about a month). We don't have Cable TV or Satellite TV, so we use the router 90% to stream movies from Netflix ALL the time to the Wii and sometimes to the MacBookPro. Mostly the Wii so the kids can watch their cartoons and stuff on a bigger screen. Anyway, I have never had a problem with the router itself, only a couple of times I had to turn off the Wii to reconnect again, but I know it wasn't the router because the laptop was working fine at the time it happened. Another thing, everything in my house is wireless, my 2 laptops, my desktop and the Wii, oh yeah and sometimes I use my phone too. I just put the router in the middle of my house (my house is not big, but not small either, is a little over 1,500 sq. ft.) and I get really good reception everywhere in the house. Excellent repecetion all the time in the laptops.
I really recommend this, once again I was scared for all the reviews, but I guess they fixed all the issues with the new routers with the latest firmware.

Cisco-Linksys WRT600N Linksys Ultra RangePlus Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am finally getting around to posting this review. I see that more recent users have been having good experiences with this product so I am considering giving it another try.
This review was originally drafted in Feb 2008 as I was preparing to return my second WRT600N with no intentions of getting a third.
Recommendation: after attempting to get two WRT600N's to work, I have come to a personal conclusion that the product is not mature and needs much more work. I applaud and am envious of others who have been able to make it work.
Review Synopsis: my first WRT600N failed to establish a connection with multiple laptops and an Xbox 360. After two hours with Linksys technical support, they recommended I return the router for replacement. Second router connected routinely, but every 10 - 20 minutes would drop the wireless connection on the 2.4 GHz signal. Returning it as well.
Full Review: I had been using a WRT54G v3 successfully for about three years now. Why replace it you ask? A few reasons:
1.I connect my Xbox 360 to a computer in my office via Media Extender. Because it is wireless from the router to the Xbox (linear distance is about 10 feet but through two glass windows), navigation of Windows Media Center on the Xbox has quite a bit of lag.
2.I live in a high rise condo... as you can imagine, the 2.4 GHz spectrum is crowded contributing to reason number 1, above.
3.I have many wireless devices connecting to my router at any one time: Xbox, Tivo HD, and up to three laptops.
4.Lately, the router will all of a sudden lose connection to the internet. This happens about once every three to four months. No amount of power cycling or refreshing of IP addresses on the Administration tab will re-establish the connection. The only solution I have found is to reset the router to factory defaults and then re-enter my settings. I have confirmed that I have the latest firmware.
After reading some favorable reviews of the WRT600N on CNET, Laptop Magazine, and other publications (I know... I know), the router seemed a solution that would fit my environment. Also, it offers the built-in USB port to which one could attach an external USB HDD for a nifty Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution.
First WRT600N: got the first one. Opened it up and boy it sure looked purdy. Followed the setup instructions to a "T" using the EasyLink Advisor software that came on an installation CD. Since I was transitioning from a Linksys product, the EasyLink software detected my existing router and led me through the steps of replacing my WRT54G with the WRT600N. There were clear pictures and the software even transferred the settings from my WRT54G to the WRT600N. The only thing it did not transfer were the MAC addresses of all the computers I had on my network.
When it came time to test the internet connection, the router could not get an IP address from the modem. The EasyLink software kept putting me in an endless loop where it checked for the internet connection, could not find one and the only assistance it gave was to go back one step (Back button was the only step available) to test it again. No hints on how to resolve the issue.
However, after a few power cycles, the router finally got an IP address and I was connected to the internet via a wired connection. I got my Gigabit Ethernet signal indication on my computer. This is where the success of the first router came to an end.
I wanted the following configuration on my router; the 5 GHz radio for the Xbox and maybe my one laptop. All other devices on the 2.4 GHz radio. I was able to connect my Xbox to the 5 GHz broadcast at first, but the signal was extremely weak ; one red bar. By comparison, the WRT54G maintains between 3 and 4 bars (out of four). The laptops connected to the 2.4 GHz signal a little easier and with better signal strength as compared to the Xbox, but showed dramatically fluctuating signal strength (50% - 85%) as soon as I took the laptops more than 15 feet away from the router. I live in a 2BR condo, total sq ft around 1100, so distance from the router should not be a factor.
I tried all combinations of settings before calling tech support. 5 GHz on mixed, then A only. 2.4 GHz on mixed, but 20 MHz bandwidth instead of 40. Mixed on all. Specified channels instead of Auto. Advanced tweaks discovered via some user forums. Nada worked. Called Linksys tech on the 24 x 7 line. No support was available until the next morning at 8 am. So much for 24 x 7. Next morning, after 2.5 hrs on the phone with Linksys tech support and failed firmware upgrade attempts, they recommended I return the router.
Second WRT600N: setup was a little more difficult with this one as the EasyLink software froze. Had to end it, reboot and restart. Same issue with not being able to get an initial internet connection as the first router. Several power cycles, resetting of the router etc. until I finally got an IP address from Cox Cable.
Now, on this second unit the wireless connections went easily and flawlessly. Connected the Xbox 360 on mixed mode on 5 G Hz with Auto setting for bandwidth. Smoother response and much less lag using Windows Media Center connected via Media Extender to my computer. Signal strength somewhere between 60 - 80%. All other wireless devices connected via "g" on the 2.4 GHz frequency. I was happy... until.
15 minutes into this, all 2.4 GHz devices dropped their signal at the same time for about 15 seconds, then came back on. Hmm. The Xbox stayed connected on 5 GHz. Again, 10 - 15 minutes later, another dropped wireless connection; this time all devices lose signal for about 10 seconds.
More tweaks, another call to tech support.
NOW, HERE IS THE CLINCHER that is making me return the second router and not giving a third attempt at this. When I talked to the tech support line, their first recommendation was to disable the 5 GHz radio! What?! Why? Yes, I know what they were trying to assess... are the radios interfering? Ok, so let's say they do... what's the point in having a dual radio router??? I told them that disabling was not a solution for a router marketed as having two radios intended for simultaneous operations. I asked if it was their intention that I operate the router only on the 2.4 GHz radio. They said, well, if that fixes your signal dropping problem, then yes. That's when I told them I might as well return the product. They tried to dissuade me from doing so and insisted that I turn off the 5 GHz radio, "just to see... ". Ok. Done. They told me to leave it that way for a few hours and call them back if it dropped. I asked, "What if it does not drop? Is it Linksys' recommendation that I operate only one radio?" The support person backed away from that and she did not want to give a definitive response. After pressing, I finally got her to reveal that there are issues with the dual radios and that the standard recommendation is to disable one of them.
Now I know that I could attempt to flash the WRT600N with third party firmware from [...] which some reviewers have done successfully and have said it fixes their issues, but I am of the belief that the manufacturer should make products that work. I am afraid to brick the product by doing something I am not experienced at so...
Time for a refund and kiss the WRT600N goodbye. I'm looking forward to the D-Link DIR-855.
Some equipment notes:
-Xbox 360 using Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter that supports 802.11abg
-Thinkpad T42 with Thinkpad 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter (Atheros OEM), Vista 32-bit
-Thinkpad T61p with Thinkpad 11 a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter (Atheros OEM), Vista 32-bit
-Dell Latitude D620 with Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, XP 32-bit
First router: S/N MNR008107370, manufactured 1/2008
Second router: S/N MNR008107361, manufactured 1/2008
Both routers came with firmware version 1.01.35 Build 5. The latest version on the Linksys support site was Build 3. I told the first tech support person who wanted me to install the Build 3 firmware of this inconsistency, but she said it does not matter... try anyway. The firmware upgrade failed on the first router. I don't know if it made a difference.
About me: though not a networking specialist or technician, I consider myself a relatively competent and experienced user of technology, installing and setting up my own equipment (which basically means I read instructions and figure things out with a bit of internet research when I run into problems).

D-Link DIR-665 Xtreme N 450 Gigabit Router Selectable Dual Band 802.11n Review

D-Link DIR-665 Xtreme N 450 Gigabit Router Selectable Dual Band 802.11n
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not sure why people are having such problems with their DIR-665 Xtreme router - I am happy to report that after three solid days of use, the router hasn't even so much as hiccuped for me.
My DIR-665 from Amazon Vine is replacing my purchased D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit Wireless Router. For those who know the older DIR-655 model, you will find the updated DIR-665 to be very familiar. In fact other than some cosmetic changes to the faceplate, the physical body is exactly the same between the two products.
I'm an IT person so of course I don't read any of the instructions or follow any of the guides. Out of the box I remove the DIR-665, notice it uses the same power adapter as my 655 so I just pull the local LAN cables, the WAN cable and the A/C Adapter and swap them over to the new 665. I'm in cable-internet country (TWC) so unfortunately the cable modem is somewhat fussy about dynamically releasing and renewing IP addresses on the fly to a new MAC, so I had to unplug/replug the cable modem in order to initiate a power cycle. After that, internet connectivity on physically connected machines was up and running.
So to recap:
1 - Unbox DIR-665
2 - Move LAN/WAN/A/C cables from DIR-655 to DIR-665
3 - Reboot cable modem
4 - Internet is go!
Wireless connectivity was a tiny bit harder since I had a specific pre-shared key that I wanted to keep in order to make reconfiguring my wireless connections easier. In that same theme, I kept my SSID name the same from when I had the DIR-655 installed. This was the first time I cracked open the web-based router configuration (192.168.0.1). Step 1 is always to change the basic blank password to something you'll remember. Step two, I simply did a once-over on the internet settings - every thing was auto-set to dynamic (which is normal for most ISPs nowadays), however if you have specific PPOE or other authentication requirements, they were all laid out here.
I noticed that the wireless config had the option of going through a wizard, so I selected that option first. Wizard is a bit misleading as you assume a wizard would explain what the options you were selecting meant. This would be my biggest gripe about the DIR-665, you really do have to have some knowledge of what you're looking at, setting-wise. Unfortunately the web-based configuration does not help in any way, there are no "?" popups or descriptions. You'll have to Google in order to find out what all the settings mean (which may be an issue if your router is down). The wizard seems to default to the widest acceptance settings, not locking out any wireless configuration, leaving security open to WPA or WPA2 and running on a closed 20Hz channel width. I didn't play around with the wizard too much so your personal results may vary.
Next, I went into manual wireless configuration in order to set up my personal preferences (a screenshot of my settings is included in the Amazon customer photos). Once I had moved to the 5GHz band, mixed 802.11a/n, Auto 20/40 Hz, my laptop reports 216-270Mbps connection speeds (screenshot also included).
One thing to keep in mind with the DIR-665 is that it runs a bit hot (again, just like the 655), so make sure it has ventilation room.
Since installation I have had zero issues with my DIR-665 - my laptop did initially have disconnect issues when I first switched to the 5Ghz spectrum, but a quick driver update for the NIC fixed that problem. In my home there are four wired computers, two wireless laptops (one 802.11g, one 802.11n), an iPod, two XBox360's (one with the new 802.11n adapter, one with the older 802.11g), and a PS3. Almost all of these devices work flawlessly. Streaming HD content from Netflx (via XBox) takes less than ten seconds to buffer. When you switch to the 5GHz network the protocols are limited to 802.11a and 802.11n. Therefore, if you have older devices that only run on 802.11g networks, they will not work when set to 5GHz (this could include iPods, phone WiFi, laptops, consoles, etc, etc). So check your wireless NICs, this may not be the router for you. Of course you could always get a secondary 802.11g WAP to hookup to your DIR-665 (this is actually what I ended up doing). For "gamers" this is how it breaks down for the 5GHz spectrum - the only units that will be able to use the 5GHz network will be XBoxes using the external "black" version of the 802.11N wireless adapter. This means that XBox 360 "slims" and PS3's will not be able to see the 5GHz network. The 360 "slims" can use the 802.11N black wireless adapter if you wanted to hook it up.
Now whether or not you'll be able to get the full oomph of the theoretical 300Mbps speed out of the dual band router is so dependent on your home configuration that it's probably silly to even try and address. Just know that just because something runs in the 5Ghz spectrum it does not mean that it's better than a 2.4Ghz device - we're not talking CPUs here, bigger does not always equate to better. Ideally the DIR-665 when in 5GHz mode is utilizing both the 2.4 and 5GHz spectrum (I really don't know how to check if this is true - if someone has a guide, I'd be willing to give it a try) and using the concept of channel bonding in order to use dual channel communication. I never saw the magical 300 number reported by Windows on my wireless NIC, but it does stay over 200 constantly and maintain a full 5 bars of signal strength.
Misc info - My router is located upstairs (laptop/xbox downstairs) in a home built after 1990. There is approximately 18ft of distance as the crow flies, but that goes through the roof/floor.
This review was done with hardware version A1, Firmware version 1.00NA
*Update 12/20/2010 - Just writing to let everyone know that I've been running this router for a little over a month and a half. Still works like a champ with zero issues. The laptop I'm writing this update from is reporting a 270Mbps connection as we speak.

D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router
Average Reviews:

This is a new power-line combo with a wireless N router so I thought it would be great in my office and extendable throughout my home. No such luck for the second part (see my review of the wireless extender DHP-W306AV). As a N router is seems fine. The CD-set up was not helpful, very confusing, and for example, did not connect to my FIOS(Verizon) router although the account/password was correct, or give me a choice of FIOS as an internet source. So I just plugged it into my current set up as I expected it to go, and after a bit with D-link support was up and running (support was fine). Namely: several devices into one 8-port switch. This switch into the 1320 router via one cable. The uplink from the router into a spare port in my Verizon router/FIOS connection. So I have both the Verizon and the D-link wireless networks going. Not sure if I can unplug the Verizon one and go directly D-link to FIOS (probably), don't want to spend the weekend trying this out. I do think that setting up these networks is terribly wasteful of time and effort. Why should I have to fight with IP addresses? And now I have a power-line N router which only does the N-part.
The wireless signal seems strong enough locally, but not enough for the house, so I am going to try a repeater, since the power-line option did not take. I have the Hawking HWREN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender on order.
Update: the Hawking arrived and was set-up in 10 mins to give a strong signal throughout the house. No problems so far. Clearly the way to go for my situation.

Cisco-Linksys WAP610N Wireless-N Access Point with Dual-Band Review

Cisco-Linksys WAP610N Wireless-N Access Point with Dual-Band
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This new WAP from Cisco / Linksys is smaller and easier to install than previous models, and is a great price for a dual band B/G/N WAP.
The range seems pretty good too, but we've noticed that there can be a huge difference with signal reception, depending on the quality of internal wireless antennae in certain laptops and netbooks.
e.g. At one of our customers' home: Her new PC netbook and laptop had 'Good' reception (3 out of 5 bars), while my Apple MacBookPro had 'Excellent' reception from the same location. The WAP was broadcasting plenty of signal.
Her two computers just couldn't receive all the signal, because of poor internal wireless antennae. So if you buy this product, and the range seems weak, don't assume it's the WAP.
Also, make sure you select 'Wireless-N Only' mode, if ALL your computers have newer 802.11n cards.
This will speed up your connection.
If you don't have N cards, then leave the setting in 'Mixed' mode, otherwise your B and G cards won't receive any signal.
Hope this helps.

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router TEW-671BR (Black) Review

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router TEW-671BR (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This router does exactly what it advertises. Concurrent dual-band w/ N speeds and all the features described above (I won't repeat them here). Setup was a breeze, though I didn't use the wizard and you probably don't need to either as it's all fairly intuitive. Set up the 2.4GHz network with the same SSID/auth as my previous router and all our devices worked seamlessly (3 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 Wiis), and all devices that could see the 5GHz band connected easily with WPA2 enabled.
The only feature that I wish was more robust is the QoS prioritization. Under a prioritization model the firmware only allows a setting of High/Low priority, or 2 levels, rather than the customary 4. Also, you can only add three custom QoS traffic types under this setting and if you game online in addition to VoIP and download torrent traffic heavily then you've already used those 3 slots, with no options for more. This being said, it does allow you to setup QoS with bandwidth allocation settings and that seemingly allows for as many settings you might want. However, if you're looking for an easy way to setup QoS for multiple custom traffic types (based on port) then this likely isn't the router for you.
That being said, speeds are still very good. I use torrents on a private tracker and easily get 1.5MB/s down wired, similar to my previous router. The difference here is that it handles the traffic based on my QoS settings without affecting my other connections, so I can easily play games online with torrent traffic in the background and don't notice lag as before.
Wireless speeds are also solid. Depending on positioning and walls the 5GHz signal easily gets everywhere in the apartment (1000 sq ft), and average connection speed is somewhere around 230 Mbps when not in the same room. This is with both internal WiFi cards on ThinkPad T400 and the TRENDnet 300 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter TEW-664UB (Version v1.0R) which I also purchased from Amazon. 2.4GHz network works as before, which for me is pretty shoddy since I live downtown and there's serious channel congestion here. That was my primary motivation for getting a 5GHz router in the first place and it's done the job admirably. I'm sure, however, that for most people the 2.4GHz band will be just fine.
Overall a great purchase especially for the price at the time. Was 30 bucks less than the nearest competitor online (newegg) and shipping was FAST with Prime! I don't regret the purchase and will by TRENDnet again in the future.

Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router Review

Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Great speed. Wireless is only less than 5% slower than ethernet connection. USB link port is very solid.
Cons: Not designed for people who want plug & play devices with no knowledge of networking.
I will agree with a lot of people regarding people that stated that this router is no good. Those people do not know what they're doing.
I bought a REFURBISHED version 1... and it works perfect. After reading so many bad reviews, I had the feeling that all refurbished WRT610Ns were probably from people who didn't know how to get it to work properly.****HOW TO PROPERLY SETUP A WRT610N ROUTER****
1) Download the latest firmware to your computer from Linksys' website. Do this even before you receive your WRT610N. Reading all the comments about the firmware, I didn't even bother trying the stock firmware.
2) Upon receiving the router, plug in the power cable and plug it into the AC outlet. No CAT5 cables yet.
Once it powers up, hold the reset button for a few seconds until the power light starts to blink. Release the reset button.
3) Once it powers up completely, plug your computer to the router with a CAT5 cable. Log into the router. Upload the new firmware.
4) After the upload is complete, unplug the power cable from the router, wait a few seconds, then plug it back it. This is to be assure the load was good.
5) Wireless configurations:
#1 Rule: Do not use auto on both G and N. Set 2.5Ghz band for B-G only and to a certain channel (6 or 11 works best). And set 5Ghz band for N only.
#2 Rule: Do not use the same encryption on both G and N. Set different encryption methods (example., WPA2 for N, WEP for G)
6) Disconnect the CAT5 cable, and try connecting to the N-wireless (do not connect to G. this is for testing purposes) Once your pc connects to the N network wirelessly, log into the router wirelessly.
7) 5Ghz in its nature is a sensitive frequency. The higher the frequency, the weaker the signal gets... but also gets faster. With that said, the 5Ghz N portion needs to be tweaked to what works best.
- On your computer, open up the Wireless Network Connection Status window. Leave this window open at all time so you can see the connection speed (If you have more than one pc with wireless N, do the same thing).
- Log into the router via wireless N. Go to Wireless Advanced section. Band: do not set AUTO on the band. Start off with 40Mhz. From there, pick the first channel (44 or something like that).
- Now check the speed(s) of the pc connection(s). Try out ever 40Mhz band until you find the best speed. If no band is solid, then result to 20Mhz. Once most solid and fastest speed is achieved, save the configs.
COMPLETE!
USB Link:
The USB link worked great. But there are some pointers. I tried two harddrives. 320GB 5400RPM SATA and 320GB 7200RPM SATA. Both were clones of each other; clean NTFS formatted with nothing but videos and music. I would recommend to edit SHARE and click on SHARE ENTIRE PARTITION. It seems much more fluid with that on. Ok, after I named my drive, shared the whole partition, and clicked on access rights, I mapped the drive to each computer to test the stability and speed. I did have a problem with my music folder that had 355 sub-folders (individual albums); it would randomly see all 355 folders. It would see 210, then 340, the 290, etc. It was a strange behavior. Since both harddrives were clones of each other, I formatted one harddrive using the Linksys Router function. It formatted the drive to NTFS FAT2. First time I've used FAT2. After I copied the contents back to the drive, I tested it again. It actually finds the files much faster than before. Don't know why. I haven't had a problem with missing folders either. Everything is found instantly. So I would highly recommend to format using the Linksys Router function. I did test out between 5400rpm and 7200rpm to see which would be better for a media storage. Attached to the linksys, neither one of them showed an real differences. I tried file transfer, playing lossless music, pictures, HD movies... all had the same performance. So I would recommend to just pick a 5400rpm since it runs on lower power consumption.
Stress Test:
I ran a very thorough performance test to see if this router could handle it.
Laptop #1 - wireless N 300Mbps connection
Laptop #2 - wireless N 280Mbps connection
Laptop #3 - wireless G 54Mbps
PS3 - wireless G 54Mbps
Wii - wireless G 54Mbps
NAS Harddrive on USB Link port
Laptop #1 to download multiple 3-5GB files from the internet.
Laptop #2 was streaming an HD movie 1080p from the NAS harddrive.
Laptop #3 was streaming lossless music from the NAS harddrive (54Mbps is too slow for HD movies)
PS3 was in an online game session (Marvel vs Capcom 2) as a spectator watching everyone play
Wii was set to stream a tv channel (Japanese Wii)
Laptop #1 was downloading at 35Mbps (which is about 2Mbps slower than when directly connected to the internet modem without Linksys). So that was still downloading at flying speeds even with all the traffic. Laptop #2 had no problem streaming an HD movie. There was some bit delay if I paused the movie or FF. But playing the movie, switching languages on the fly, etc... had no problems at all. It played smoothly. Laptop #3 was playing flac lossless audio files while browsing through the folders with no problems. PS3 never lost the connection to the online game. And the Wii never froze with the tv channel. I ran this test overnight with no problems at all.
Conclusion: This router works. It's very fast, stable, and had no problems. Just make sure you configure it properly. One piece of advise regarding wireless cards, stay away from the Intel N cards. They work poorly with the Linksys N routers. I tried three different Intel N cards and two Linksys N routers. I was never able to achieve a 300Mbps connection with any configuration.
I hope you will find this review helpful.

Linksys Ultra RangePlus, Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless RouterThe Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router is really four devices in one box.First, there's the dual-band Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect to the network without wires. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together at up to gigabit speeds. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. We've also included a Storage Link that lets you easily add gigabytes of storage space onto your network using readily available USB 2.0 hard drives -- or plug in a USB flash disk for a convenient way to access your portable data files. The built-in Media Server streams music, video, and photos from the attached storage device to any UPnP compatible media adapter. And you can get to your files from anywhere in the world through the Internet. The Access Point built into the Router uses a dual-band version of the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n).By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate.Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signals travel farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G.

I bought this wireless card because my old wireless card that was working fine on windows xp was not compatible. I bought a new dell that had Windows 7 professional 64 bit. Surprisingly, not a lot of wireless cards would say whether they're Windows 7 compatible. I read the box on this unit and said it worked on Vista 64 bit. Once at home, i disregarded the instructions and installed the card first. Upon bootup, Windows 7 had already detected and properly installed the wireless card. It worked seamlessly. Once installed, Windows 7 Update founded a more update driver for the card.
I'll post updates if i notice anything odd about this card. At this moment, I'm getting a Fair Connection with my router. The router is located at the other end of the hallway.
The price is another story...yes it's very over price.

D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N 8-Port Router Review

D-Link DIR-632 Wireless-N 8-Port Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll start by saying that I have several Windows 7 and several Mac PCs in the house. I had been using a Westell wireless modem/router provided by Frontier DSL (Formerly Verizon DSL in Washington State). The Westell was starting to have problems with one of my Macs (The IP Address kept dropping or some such thing) so I needed a new router. The Quick Start Guide that comes with this D-Link router tells you all you need to know for what is truly a very simple set up process. I simply installed the CD ROM into one of my Windows machines, followed the prompts and, voila!, my new network was up and running.
One terrific benefit to this router that, as of the date of this review, no one has mentioned, is that you have the option of using it as a stand alone router OR IN ADDITION TO your existing router/modem. This latter option provides the user with the addition of even more Ethernet ports because they can use the eight with the D-Link and all but one of the ones on the old router. Note: One of the ports on the old router will need to be used to connect it to the new D-Link. It's also important to note that this is just a router. It does not have a modem so if your existing setup was like mine, with a router/modem, then, assuming there's nothing wrong with your existing modem, you will likely want to ADD this in the same manner that I did.
Of course, if all you need are additional Ethernet ports your money will be much better spent on something like TRENDnet 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Standard Switch (8 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S80G (Black Metal). This piece of equipment will provide you with a hub to plug into your existing router.
I've noticed some reviewers have had issues with Mac. I had none whatsoever. If you only have Mac and no Windows then there's a manual set up process in the Quick Start Guide. If you have both Windows and Mac PCs, I recommend your first set up be with a Windows PC. When you're finished with the Windows set up you'll have all the information you need to just go to your Airport Icon and Join your new network.
I've only used the new network for a couple of days. If I experience any problems, I'll come back and revise my review accordingly.
Update: After three months of use this baby's working like a charm. Not a single issue. I am very happy with this product.

NETGEAR WNDR3300 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router Review

NETGEAR WNDR3300 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This seemed like one of the best home use Netgear wireless routers when looking at the Netgear model line up. When I bought this router, I didn't fully understand how "dual band" worked, but it sounded good for reducing interference. I wanted the best, so I got this one.
Now I realize I cannot benifit from the dual band. The WNDR3300 can only be wirelessly configured in the following ways:
N at 2.4 GHz with max 270 Mbps (uses +- 4 channels for extra bandwidth, a/b/g clients also work)
N at 5 GHz with max 270 Mbps and Legacy G at 2.4 GHz with max 54 Mbps
N at 2.4 GHz with max 130 Mbps (considered neighbor friendly version, reduces number of channels utilized)
N at 5 GHz with max 130 Mbps and Legacy G at 2.4 GHz with max 54 Mbps
So if you don't have any N clients that can utilize 5 GHz, you cannot benifit from dual band. I also ended up having a client (LG BD390 Blu-ray player) that just would not work using N at 2.4 GHz (even though LG documentation says it is compatible with 802.11n draft standard). For this one client, I had to step down to Legacy G at 2.4 GHz. I would have been fine with just an old fashion G router.
Doing some tests, I realized with Legacy G, I was getting the same performance with N at 2.4 GHz with max 270 Mbps, so I wasn't too disappointed about having to step down to Legacy G. Hopefully LG and/or Netgear will provide a firmware update that will allow the two devices to communicate using N.
Signal stength is better than what I had before. I can now stream Vudu HDX wirelessly (extreamly demanding). With my previous router, I could only stream Vudu HD (less demanding). So I hesitate in taking this back, thinking I paid more than I needed to. There are multiple antennas in this device and the lights on the big blue button tells you which antenna is being employed. This antenna technology also seems to benifit Legacy G. By the way, you can shut off the flashing blue lights just by pressing the big blue button (hold less than 2 seconds).
-- Begin Update 12/15/2009 --
I did some further tests comparing N with Legacy G. It seems the N on 2.4 GHz with max 270 Mbps has worse range than the Legacy G. I'm comparing signal bar strength of various apps in various locations in my home. So it seems stepping down to the older G works better. All in all, I've decided to keep this router dispite my uninformed decision to purchase it. I'm convinced the 8 internal antennas is helping matters compared to my previous router. Performance is markedly better than before, so I don't want to risk taking the time and money to experiment.
-- End Update 12/15/2009 --

I am in the business of IT and telecom.
I have used some other high end WiFi AP and routers in my days.
This DLink 628, even though just a consumer unit, has blurred the line between professional and consumer use wifi routers.
The setup is a breeze. I was up and running (using Mac), without the set up CD, in less than 3 min.
First on speed, it is fast. Side by side testing with the Dlink DIR655, they are both the same speed with all of the config being the same.
The QoS feature is wonderful, you can prioritize by IP to many tiers. So now when my kids are playing games with voice and video, my html browsing can have priority over them. (Since in routing, the voice and video gets priority in getting transferred.)
All in all, this is a wonderful unit for the price (only $75 now on Amazon).
I would buy this one over the DIR 655 since I really don't see any speed improvement on the 655 but almost twice the price.
I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it as a good buy.

Our router bit the dust and my son had taken to connecting to the neighbor's access point, while I chose to tether to my mobile phone. Meanwhile, it was only a matter of time before other family members found dissatisfaction in either of these contingencies. What is a skinflint like me to do?
I wanted, well, everything...
* 802.11 b/g/n
* at least 4 gigabit Ethernet ports
* dual-band
* ability to connect an external drive as a simple NAS
* a 2-yr warranty would be nice
Costco had these on sale for $89.99. I couldn't say 'no'.
Setup was a breeze. The Belkin Router Monitor app sits in the System Tray and makes configuration easy. Most configuration parameters have help files that can be called up by clicking on the parameter's title and help files are quite good.
Performance is very good. Gigabit Ethernet ports are fast (as they should be). Wireless is predictable (so far) and reaches 150-ft (54Mb). Configuring remote devices is easy.
Only thing is, when I connected my 1TB WD MyBook drive, the router would not recognize it. I finally called tech support and learned that the router ONLY supports SELF-POWERED portable USB drives or thumb drives. I tested this with a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Go drive, which I had on hand, and the router detected it instantly and network access was very quick. I'm glad I didn't buy an externally powered drive.
