This ATA just isn't very good. The web interface is incredibly clumsy and the features are limited. For the price, you can get Linksys (Sipura) ATAs that have both FXO and FXS ports and are far more capable and convenient to use, although Amazon for some reason chooses not to sell them directly.

NETGEAR SPH200D - Cordless phone / VoIP phone - DECT - Skype Review

I've always wanted one of these because I really wanted to give the voip thing a shot and save some cash too, but the initial price tag of these things were crazy, $700 all the way up to nearly $1,000 when availability got tight, NUTS! Now you can get them at about 60% to 70% off those prices and at that, while still not next to nothing, is still much more of a viable option for the masses. The thing to remember is that this is a dated phone, although it still does its job fine, it just doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer models. While you can hook it up to your standard phone line and your modem line I prefer to leave it just hooked up to the modem and use it as my Long Distance phone. Some say why bother with it when you can get skype via your cpu for free regardless but just call me old fashioned, I like using the phone. Also I'm on the cpu way to much in my life already, whatever I can do to get away from it I've decided is worth doing. It's really just a phone and that's what I wanted. I would 100% recommend using the setup disk or simply setting up your account online with Skype instead of doing all the stuff through the handset. Once set up the program really does transition flawlessly from your online settings and contacts right to the handset.
I do have one technical recommendation and fix I'll detail here. For the record I found this fix on one of the other reviews on this site but expanded upon it so the very basic cpu user can do it, and this fix is only needed if you have a cpu in conjunction with the phone, because as stated this phone only needs a modem you technically don't have to have a cpu to use it, all the setup can be done right on the handset. But of course if you're on this site I'll just assume you have a cpu. Now you will need a pencil and paper:
1st- On the handset hit the menu button, scroll to the settings tab and press select.
2nd- Scroll to the Network tab and press select
3rd- Press select on the DHCP, write down the IP address (all numbers and dots in exact sequence)
4th- On your CPUs address bar type in the exact IP address you wrote down, NO http or WWW (all numbers and dots in exact sequence)
5th- When prompted use the user name - admin and the password - password.
6th- On the left side of the Blue and White Netgear page select the Network option.
7th- there are two selections, the 2nd, Link Speed, should be set to Auto. It comes factory set to 10M, which is a low quality link compatible for older systems. Even if you have an older system in most cases you pull more than 10M and being in auto means your system won't be held slave to a set point.
Also you should save the IP address for future reference and system tweaks along with status info.
Thanks and hoped that helped.

I could not rewire my house. There was too much distance and too many obstructions for wireless - and I was concerned about security. I installed the Linksys phoneline router and USB phoneline adapters. Everthing installed easily. Works great. And has been working great for about a year. Slower than Ethernet (I can tell when I transfer files between PCs) - but faster than my DSL connection - which is all that matters. Anyone who wants a no new wires installation should consider this approach.

Linksys SPA3000 Analog Telephone Adapter 1 Port FXO + 1 Port FXS Review

Linksys SPA3000 Analog Telephone Adapter 1 Port FXO + 1 Port FXS
Average Reviews:

This is a powerful product, but with lots of settings, no manual, and some complexity to configure. Once configured, it works beautifully. I've configured it so that our local calls go out through our regular local phone company on the regular local phone line, but our long distance calls seamlessly go out via SIP on our VOIP provider. My non-technical wife just picks up the phone and dials any number, and it automatically figures out how to place the call for a good rate. Incoming calls just come in seamlessly. Caller ID works fine. It took about five evenings to get it set up properly, and I have a degree in computer science and lots of computer networking experience.
There's no manual provided with the product, and Sipura has not made the manuals easily visible on their website. If you're thinking about this product, do a web search for help in figuring out how to configure it. This is NOT something you'll just figure out without documentation.
Some embedded documentation would help this product tremendously. It's mostly configured via a web browser; while configuring, I should be able to click a "help" button for an explanation of what the various fields do. Even a well-written paper manual would help (the .pdf file I found wasn't so great). If this product were documented properly, it'd almost certainly rate 5 stars.

Does anybody actually read the Terms of Service? Here is an excerpt of what Comcast is trying to sell:
Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, using the Service,
Customer Equipment, or the Comcast Equipment to:
run programs, equipment, or servers from the Premises that provide
network content or any other services to anyone outside of your
Premises LAN (Local Area Network), also commonly referred to as public
services or servers. Examples of prohibited services and servers
include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and
proxy services and servers.
In other words, you even cannot put a few pictures on your computer and share them through your ComCast "Internet" connection with friends via your own web server. Hey, this is the dead AOL model of an Internet.
ComCast also reserves the right to change the terms at any time without prior notice. Buy a car and let the dealer reserve the right to remove the engine later. Thanks, but no thanks!

Brother MFC-5440CN Network Inkjet Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax Review

Brother MFC-5440CN Network Inkjet Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent printer/scanner/fax for the money. I had purchased this as a replacement to an extremely problematic HP 5110.
Install: Installation was extremely easy. Just follow the directions and everything works within about 30 minutes. I really can't stress enough how easy it was to setup this printer. Whether you set it up with a standard USB connection or ethernet/network, the software does everything for you and the software install only takes around 5 minutes.
Software: The software is really simple and easy to use. The downside to this is that it is somewhat too simple. For advanced users that want more options and customizability, they wont find it here. Also, having the preset scan buttons is a little annoying if you like to change your scan options a lot.
I should also note that you can scan/copy things using either your computer or the buttons on the unit. This is very very smooth and allows you do be able to scan things without having to navigate to the ControlCenter on your PC. If you set up the printer on the network it will also even allow you to pick which PC to send the files to.
Printer: Print quality is right on for this price range. This is not a photo printer, but nevertheless printing onto photo quality paper isnt bad. But at the prices you can get digital photos developed at Walmart or Target nowadays, it doesnt really matter.
Scanner: Scan quality is great, scans up to 6000x1200 DPI. Even 300x300 DPI looks great.
Fax: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this as I have no reason to fax anyone. But if the scan/print quality is any indication, this would work seamlessly as well.
Ink: This printer uses individual C/M/Y/K cartridges. So when one color runs out, you only have to replace that color. The size of the ink cartridges is pretty big, too, so they last longer. The downside to this is that the print head is not replaceable since they are not part of the print cartridges. So you pretty much have to replace the entire printer when it goes out.
Networking: Another GREAT reason to buy this product is that is comes with built-in networking. This is completely unheard of in other brands in this price range and greatly adds to the value of this printer. You can set it up for wireless use or wire it directly to your router/hub. You can also scan images in and send it to any computer on your network ... directly from the printer!
Price: This is in the $ 100-150 price range, which is more or less the low range for AIO printers. In this range, you pretty much have to choose from Lexmark, HP and Brother. Lexmark printers in this range are really cheap and their ink cartridges are overpriced. HP is very problematic, have smaller ink cartridges and are also overpriced. Overall, Brother is the best buy.
Overall: I'm in love. Not only is this the best printer for the money, but this is a GREAT printer/scanner PERIOD. After this experience all my future printers will be Brother brand. I will never buy Lexmark/HP/etc ever again.

Acer Aspire One AOD255-2691 10.1-Inch Netbook (Diamond Black) Review

Acer Aspire One AOD255-2691 10.1-Inch Netbook (Diamond Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this little netbook for about a week now, and it is exactly right for our purposes: email, browsing, YouTube, MiniClip games, and word processing. It comes with Office 2010 starter (just word and excel) which is all we need. I'm not a techie and have no specifics to share, but this thing just WORKS. Right out of the box, you spend 10 minutes setting up, charge it up, and go. The first time you use Office you need to install it. I followed the recommendation of some other reviewers and (1) uninstalled some bloatware it came with (Acer games, NY Times Reader) and (2) installed Chrome and made it the default browser. IE was taking forever to load anything, but Chrome is much lighter and works perfectly. And the wireless is impressive-- it works even way down the long narrow hallway in my thick-brick-walls 1850's apartment building from where the router is placed-- our old Vaio couldn't handle it. The red is a nice warm cranberry/barn red shade-- a little pizzaz but it doesn't look like a toy. It's very light. It has no disk drive, but I see here on Amazon that inexpensive external ones are easy to find.
Two small gripes: (1) battery life is pretty short. Three hours at the most. It does charge up quickly though. (2) The keys are that sort of 'mushroom' format, they look just made for crumbs to sneak under and get stuck, and with kids in the house I feel the need to be protective. But obviously I need to do that anyway. And for less than $300 we won't be devastated even if the worst happens. Overall I could not be more pleased with this purchase!
I recommend the HP Mini case to go with this, black with silver swirls. It's just the right size, well made and very cushiony and protective.
