Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAD500100 Review

I was not going to write a review for this product initially. However, I received an email from Amazon advertising this product, along with the other GoFlex drives from Seagate and I saw that this component received a one star rating. After reading the one-star rating, I can tell you all emphatically that the rating is NOT deserved.
First off, the initial customer review information about the dock station is inaccurate, way inaccurate. The HD comes with a dock station (with its own wiring) AND a separate portable connection cable, which truly makes it portable since you can have it set to connect to multiple pcs without breaking down a dockstation connection.
Second the USB 2.0 connection is false since both the dock station and connection cable attach to a pc via USB. Now, neither of the connection cables connect to the HD itself via USB, but thats becuz its connects using SATA type connections you would see on the back of an internal hard drive.
The installation software is built into the HD, so when you connect for the first time to a pc, it prompts you to install the drivers. The software is very easy to manage and pretty much begs you back up your files, although escaping that prompt is so easy, its almost amusing.
The best part of the HD is that its not bulky in the least. I am a lifetime Seagate supporter due to my undying love for Maxtor and the fact that Seagate bought them and for a long while, I have been shopping for portable external drives to use with my hp netbook. This HD is the smallest (although in fairness, its not ipod small) I've seen and fits comfortably in my carrying case.
I cant say that this protable HD is the end-all device becuz honestly, I wont ever compare it to anything else other than what eventually becomes its successor in my household. But, I can say that I am uber happy with this purchase and unless youre an eternal hater of the brand or youre looking for something with the device that you already know it doesnt have when you buy it, you will be happy with your purchase as well.

Clickfree Wireless Automatic Backup - NAS - 500 GB - HD 500 GB x 1 Review

Clickfree Wireless Automatic Backup - NAS - 500 GB - HD 500 GB x 1

This is a brilliant product. Just like the description says, plug in the captive USB cable to notebook PC and it finds user files and backs them up. In the process it finds enough info to connect to your wireless network (with absolutely no user intervention) and then it keeps a running incremental backup of all your data via the wireless connection. I used it on an older laptop running Windows XP and then repeated for a second notebook running Windows 7. Very painless process from start to finish.
BTW, Previously I had purchased an Apple Time Capsule to perform wireless back-up. After much aggravation I got it mostly working on the Win XP machine although Windows rudimentary backup program forced me to manually invoke the backups. When I tried to do the same on the Windows7 machine I learned that Microsoft intentionally prevents backup to network drive on home version of Win7!
ClickFree solves all the issues. I'd recommend this to anyone with a Windows notebook.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Net STAK100 Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Net STAK100

This is one of those products that is probably the reverse of most tech products. In this case, the average non-techie will probably love it - but people who know their way around computers are going to be baffled.
As with most products like this, I planned on just bypassing the Pogoplug service altogether and treating this like a networked docking station. That would have been something I could really use. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major hassle to access this device without using either the Pogoplug website or their desktop access software - and I'm not interested in using either of those methods.
According to the full manual, which is downloadable from the Seagate website, the GoFlex Net CAN be accessed as a networked device. The network name is supposed to be the letters 'FADS' followed by part of the MAC address. In my case, that name never showed up - so I went to my DHCP server to verify that the name hadn't been registered, and it hadn't. I did find the IP address in use by the GoFlex Net through some experimentation, but couldn't use it to access the device through either Win7 Explorer or Internet Explorer (I figured http was a long-shot, but tried it anyway).
It is possible that other people will have better luck accessing this directly, but I couldn't get it to work in my environment.
After giving up on direct access, I gave in and activated the GoFlex Net using the Pogoplug service. The activation was easy; and, after playing with the interface for a bit, I can see that there probably is a specific class of users that will appreciate this device. It is easy to access data on the docked drives through the Pogoplug web interface, so you could have your data available from anywhere you have an Internet connection.
Overall, if you're looking for a dock that will work as a type of NAS device, you should steer clear of this. If you simply want some storage that is available from anywhere you are, then this is probably a reasonable solution.

Backup doesn't get better or easier than this. I just installed this unit 4/16/11 and the entire setup took less than 5 minutes total. I have an old laptop with 40g HD. ClickFree backed up the entire HD in about 1.5 hrs total. I disconnected it from the PC and plugged it into the AC power. It configured the wireless connection without any problem. This is truly effortless backup.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive STAC2000100 (Black) Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive STAC2000100 (Black)

Pros:
1. easy to install
2. easy to use
3. Specific Folders can be selected for backup
4. It turns off and on when computer is turned off and on.
Cons:
1. Software license only allows use with 1 computer
2. Many ads to purchase more software in the bundled software
3. There is a memory leak in the software (version 4.60.0.7252)
I plugged this thing in and it automatically started the software install which was very easy to follow. Once it was done it defaulted to backup my entire computer which was perfect because 2 TB of space if plenty of space to do this for me. The software did have an option to select only specific folders which was nice to know in case I upgrade my pc and have to limit the amount of files for backup.
The software has built in advertisements asking you to try and purchase more of their software. They are easily avoidable, but I'd rather not see them. My favorite part about the backup software bundled with this external hard drive is that it is constantly working to create a mirror image of all the data on the pc. It updates files on the external as soon as they are updated on the pc.
The biggest issue I ran into was that the software only allows you to install it on one pc. I had planned on using this drive with both my pcs and backing it up over my home network. I am going to continue using the drive, but I will go back to using cobian backup which is free; though the interface is a bit less easy.[...]
I do want to say that if you are planning on only using this with one pc or you are willing to purchase extra licenses to utilize the very easy to use interface then this is a very good product.
** My original review didn't contain the below information ***
This problem didn't occur right away. The memory leak in the memeo software bundled with the drive causes windows to popup a message that there is a problem with .NET software. Windows will handle it when you click ok, but all that happens is the Memeo software is closed. I checked the system memory before I closed the program and saw it was using over 1.5 Gigabytes of RAM. I am currently running the most up to date version of Memeo instant backup (version 4.60.0.7252).

Clickfree Automatic Home Backup C2N 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 1037N (Piano Black) Review

Clickfree Automatic Home Backup C2N 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive 1037N (Piano Black)

I'm paranoid about losing data and have through the years used Ghost in concert with various backup software as well as (belt & suspenders) copies of major libraries on external hard drives AND Mozy and Carbonite internet services. In short, I've tried it all for many years and always had a fear that I was missing something through a set-up error or such. I've had this solution for over a week now and nothing could be easier. I'm now writing the review as the product has performed flawlessly for a week doing what it's supposed to do. The set-up is easy: insert the USB set-up device into a USB port and like magic your machine is configured. Plug the cable from the drive into a USB port and plug the power cable into the wall and walk away; this thing will do its own thing without any help from you. Daily (or on re-boot) it'll automatically create a backup set and run the backup with no intervention. Do as I have and check it out daily to see what it missed (it doesn't fail--even gets all your e-mails and contacts.) As a network capable device it'll back up all computers on the network although I haven't used that capability. There's not much more to say--the thing does all the work, you don't; it's nicely made and nicely priced; you should continue to use an internet service as a fire or such would wipe out the computer and this device and even this drive could fail (think lightning strike that gets both the computer and backup at the same time.)
Update 6 months later: Still works just fine, still rates 5 stars
